Los Osos High School Ready to Race to Victory at the 2019 Solar Cup Competition

Los Osos Solar Cup

Cucamonga Valley Water District is pleased to announce that Los Osos High School (LOHS) was selected as one of only three schools regionally for the Solar Cup Competition nominee allotment. Together with the Inland Empire Utilities Agency, the District will sponsor and support LOHS as they compete for victory for the seventh year in a row. Last year, LOHS placed 16th overall and received 2nd place in Endurance and 1st place for their technical reports within their region.

“Last year we had a few hiccups during the competition, but we are ready to come back even stronger this year,” said Kathleen Diver the LOHS team advisor.

Solar Cup has been held by the Metropolitan Water District for over 16 years and is the nation’s largest solar-powered boating competition. It teaches high school students how to apply their skills in engineering, science, math, problem-solving and resource conservation. Each year the competition is held at Lake Skinner in Temecula, where over 600 students from 38 schools compete in various boat races.

“Every year the talent and innovation demonstrated by the Solar Cup participants is astonishing! The hard work of the students over the year long program gives them the tools they need to thrive and excel after high school,” said CVWD Board President James V. Curatalo Jr.

Students and teacher advisors have already started their eight month journey to the competition, which includes attending boat-building and technical workshops, completing a Public Service Announcement, two technical reports and building their 16-foot, single-seat boat powered by the sun. The students will have a chance to put their hard work to the test during Solar Cup Competition weekend, taking place May 17-19, 2019, at Lake Skinner.
